Lately I have felt a bit preachy, especially on my Facebook page where my entries have consisted mostly of asking people to sign petitions by pressing buttons. I’m back to thinking about that poem “Because of These Things” because sometimes I write these poems and I have no idea where they came from. As I write them I may think I understand them, but years later I realize that I wrote them without knowing what they mean. I’m serious.Today I got this poem a little bit more. Years later. You may or may not have any idea how weird that feels. Maybe you do.
And there were those of us
who then listened and heard
the savannas of ages
humming their time and time again chant.
That same earth-old chant
that rests in our throats

I was in a restaurant a few weeks ago with a friend and a someone that I had just met that day. I’ve known the friend for several years and he does something that I don’t notice anymore. He has this gadget on his waistband that he uses to give himself insulin before he eats his meal. He started to work the gadget and his friend says to him in a mock reprimand, “Are you texting?” Continue reading »
